To a non gamer this may be mistaken with the sound of the Great Horned Owl’s call. To a seasoned gamer this is the well known cry of victory. “WOOT How I love thee”, “WOOT for whom the bell tolls”, “to WOOT or not too WOOT, that is the question”. Though gamers like to claim this as an original creation, it is not. The earliest documented use was in Middle English literature. The term can be found in line 849 of Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Wife of Bath’s Tale : "For wel I woot thy pacience is gon." ("For well I know your patience will be gone").
It wasn’t until the early 90’s when it resurfaced in rap songs “Whoomp, there it is!” and “Woot, there it is!” by Tag Team and 95 south respectively, where it was meant to indicate ones fascination with a lady. This is still commonly used in MMORPGs when male dwarves spot a rather voluptuous female dwarf. (Other dwarven colloquialisms include "baby’s got axe!".)
In general Woot is the best way to express ones delight at something. Just say it out loud with meaning and you will understand. Woot is also a short form for "Oh wow, hey check out the loot" or "WOW LOOT!!!". Thus the term is usually associated with joy in receiving nice shiny or otherwise coveted items.
The term itself has many incarnations and through leet speak is also widely accepted as ’w00t’ which is determined to be more cool. (Err.. c00l).
